Melontown Gets a New Mayor

Over the Grape-a-may Hill,

in the Kiwanese Sea,

lies an island of melon farmers

who are happy and free.

The melon farmers' home

is known as Melontown--

a name that quite suits them

for their melons abound.

Those who live there are peaceful.

They're called Melonettes.

Why are they called that?

I bet you can guess!

They care for each other;

big, tall, short, and small;

with kindness and justice,

and of course, fun for all.

What made their town great,

in case you haven’t heard,

was that for the Melontown Mayor,

freedom was more than a word.

In themselves, not the Mayor,

Melonettes should believe.

So he gave them the freedom

to succeed and achieve.

One day the Melontown Mayor

announced he'd retire,

and they'd hold an election

for a new Mayor to hire.

Because the Mayor made laws

--Melontown's dos and don'ts--

it was an important decision,

and each had a vote.

Once all Melonettes voted

and every opinion was voiced,

Francis Hugo Monroe

was announced as their choice.

Mayor Monroe got to work,

"I want everyone to hear

my plans for our future,

and I want to be clear."

"I promised if elected

all your needs would be met.

But, some things need to change;

some new rules should be set."

"Melonettes should be equal;

we should all be the same;

not one better than another;

with more fortune or fame."

"Some of you have more melons

and this just has to stop!

It's not fair if you're working

to have a big crop!"

It was starting out small,

as many things do,

but one or two laws

turned into a few.

They agreed to add laws,

and were willing to take

100 brand new rules

for “equality's” sake!

Francis Hugo Monroe

just loved passing laws,

no matter how silly,

no matter how flawed.
