Ask Your Body

Understanding the Body’s Needs

Yvonne Perry

“Time for lunch!” Von-Von called from the

kitchen.

There was no answer from Sidney. He was in

his room playing with his toy cars and trucks.

Von-Von walked to the door and repeated,

“Time for lunch, Sidney.”

“I’m not hungry,” he replied. “VROOM!”

Von-Von knelt down next to Sidney, “How do

you know you aren’t hungry? Perhaps you are

just so busy having fun that you don’t want to

stop playing to come and eat. If you aren’t

hungry, then you don’t have to eat, but why not

ask your body what he wants and let him

decide?”

Sidney looked at his tummy and asked, “Body,

are you hungry?”

After a moment Von-Von asked, “What did your

body tell you?”

“He said, ‘Yes.’”

“Then, I’ll race you to the kitchen!” said Von-

Von standing up quickly.

Sidney jumped up, pushed past her and ran

toward the kitchen. Von-Von ran fast, but

Sidney still made it there first.

“Ah, you win!” said Von-Von as she sat down at

the table.

Sidney went to the pantry and grabbed a bag

of cookies and started munching.

“What are you doing?” asked Von-Von.

“Eating,” smiled Sidney.

“Wait a minute. I have prepared a nice meal

for us. Come and see.”

Sidney walked to the table and saw steamed

carrots with honey, tenderly seasoned green

beans, broccoli with cheese, and a whole

wheat roll.

“YUCK! I don’t like veggies!” he said.

“Maybe veggies don’t taste as good as cookies,

but they are good for your body. Why not ask

your body if he wants to eat veggies?”

“Body, do you want to eat veggies?” Sidney

asked.

“Tell me what he said,” asked Von-Von.

“My tummy wants veggies, but my mouth wants

cookies!”

“I think we can please both of them. Let’s put

some healthy food in your tummy, then you

may have a few cookies to make your taste

buds happy!”

Sidney was disappointed, but after a few bites

he said, “Hey, these veggies really do taste

good.”
