To Diet or not to Diet

Do you really have to diet? It depends on who you are asking to. Different people have differing appetites. Some people have no control over what they eat or how much they eat. So what do they do? They go on a diet spending a whole lot of money. How much, one may ask? About $40 billion a year1. An astounding sum, if you were to ask me.

Is it so hard to control what goes into your mouth? You don’t just pick up stuff from the floor and stick it into your mouth, just because they look appealing, do you? You may like what you see, lying there on the floor, looking at you with that quizzical smile. But no one in their right mind would just bend down and pick it up, unless you are George from one of those Seinfeld Episodes. Much less, stick it in to your precious mouth. Then, why would you keep on eating something, just because it is in a clean plate? Looks appealing? Taste good? Won’t bite back? Let’s just look at this weird scenario depicted below.

“I am really sorry, but I have to do this. I just can’t help myself!”

You might wonder who said that; it was a rapist. Well, if you eat too much, then you are just like him. So, as you can see, the $40 billion can be spent wisely instead of trying to control what you eat and or how much you must eat just to stay alive and lose all those unwanted pounds.

If you believe in dieting, then you are no different from people who spend money on psychic readings and astrology. The scientific community has already proven that both psychic readings and astrology have no scientific basis and that people who believe in them are just hopeless, including Nancy Reagan.

If you remember correctly, Nancy Reagan was a firm believer in psychic readings and astrology2. Before major bills were signed into law, Mrs. Reagan would seek help from Psychics. This fact is explained in many articles on various websites. So if you are curious, just Google it and you will be surprised, just as this author was!

Are You Bored?

There are many lines of evidence that indicate that a lot of people overeat because they’re bored out of their minds. They just don’t know what to do? How about some gardening? You don’t have a garden? Start one. No land? Go help someone else. Post your name on the notice board at the local church or where you work.

The flier should go something like this “Wanted a garden, will provide free food and water for the plants in the garden.” This should get somebody’s attention. Well, you never know until you try!

Remember the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, the Emperor of the French (1804-1815), during the latter stages of the French Revolution? He learned from just watching a spider jump several times until it succeeded. So, the moral of the story is, try, try, and try… until you succeed! Remember the cartoon where the crane is swallowing a large frog whose hands are around the bird’s neck, choking it, although the frog’s head is already in the bird’s mouth, with the caption “never give up!”

My next suggestion would have been to take up ‘gourmet cooking’. But since the problem here is overeating, taking up cooking as a hobby might be counterproductive. When I watch a cooking show, — they are all over the tube, several times a day — just by looking at the cook, most of the time I can predict if the cook is a good cook or a bad cook.

If the food you cook is so good, then you will be in the same boat as the rapist, who apologizes before he ravishes you. “I am sorry, but I just can’t help it,” really?

Food Addiction

You probably heard about alcoholism and how people go for the Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, where, when your turn comes, you get up, introduce yourself and say: “Hi, I am Joey and I am an alcoholic.”

Meetings like this provide help and support for overcoming a debilitating disorder such as being a slave to an addictive habit similar to food addiction. Some people “live to eat while others eat to live,” so it’s up to you to decide which category you as a reader belong to!

Another popular addiction these days is sex addiction. Nymphomaniacs do require a lot of sex, but nymphomania, also called hyper-sexuality is extremely frequent or sudden increases in sexual urges or sexual activity. Although hyper-sexuality can be caused by some medical conditions or medications, in most cases the cause is still debated.

Many theoretical models have been used to explain or treat nymphomania. The most common one, especially in the popular media, is the sexual addiction approach, but sexologists have not reached any consensus on the subject. Therefore, as of now, nymphomania is believed to be different from sex addiction.

Just as alcoholism can be cured, any addiction is treatable. There are support groups for different addictions, and the meetings go something like this: “Hi, I am Joey and I am a sex addict.” So you can see that addictions can be anything, something you just think that you can’t live without and you just can’t help yourself doing it!

Other examples are tobacco smoking, coffee drinking, gambling, and so on. But if you ask yourself, is it impossible to live without coffee? Sure you can, if you choose not to have it. Again it’s all in your mind. Probably what we need is a lesson in mind control.

May be chanting “Jesus…Jesus…” for about thirty minutes in a quiet place, when you get the urge to engorge yourself might help, just a suggestion. One never knows, what helps and what doesn’t, unless you try it out. If I were you I would chew on some carrots and broccoli until the next meal time rolls around!

Look at the case of drug addicts who are locked up in jail; do they get their drugs in jail? No they don’t, but they manage to live without it. So if they can live in jail without their drugs, coffee or sex, sure they can do so outside the jail too. It is possible that they might go back to whatever they were taking before they got busted. This scenario is similar to a proverb that says “if you put your dog’s tail in a straight pipe for a year and then take it out, it’s still going to bend.”

A friend of mine told me that two of her brothers in their forty’s drinks like a fish, alcohol that is, but one of them quits drinking for forty days before Easter and gets right back on the wagon after Easter. My point is, if he can live without a drink for forty days, then he sure can continue for the rest of the year and quit the habit for good!

“I just got to have it,” that’s the feeling that drives an addict towards a pot of coffee or anything like that.

Food addiction is just like sex addiction or any other addiction for that matter. If the food you eat is too tasty, you feel like engorging yourself with it, until you can’t take it anymore. But, if that’s a problem, then cook only what you need and no more. This way, you can’t have anymore even if you wanted it. Cooking less food will have the same impact as having a ‘lap-band surgery’, you want to eat more, but you can’t because, then you will get sick!

If you live near fast food restaurants, then move to a place where fast foods are not easily available. If you really got to eat French fry, then make some, instead of buying it. The effort of slicing potatoes and frying them in oil will actually slow you down. You would probably end up losing weight instead of gaining any. But if your mom or spouse makes it for you, then it beats the purpose!

If I were you, I would stock fruits and vegetables to eat instead of snacks. Vegetables like carrot, broccoli & cauliflower can be cut into small pieces and can be eaten instead of chips or other snacks. Soda is another big calorie item. The best thing to do is to keep off drinks with lots of sugar in them. Always read the label before consuming any prepackaged item.

Fruits and vegetables are expensive, but your life is more precious. If you have a backyard, you can grow beans, tomatoes, and okra easily without much effort, and you might even enjoy while doing it. If you get addicted to gardening, don’t fret, donate the leftovers to your neighbors, they will love you for that and might even invite you for playing tennis with them. Before you know, you will be fit as a fiddle and might even swear off doctors for a change. Who needs them?

If you are worried about your veggies going bad, either freeze them or buy frozen packs from a grocery store. Fruits can also be bought in bags that are already frozen. So, after a meal, if you still feel hungry, heat up some frozen vegetables in a microwave oven or have some fruit, until you feel satisfied.

Drinking soup with plenty of fluid in it will fill you up too. Try Ramen Noodles for twenty cents apiece at your local grocery store. You can add leftover meats and vegetables into the pot to make it tasty, just the way you like it. Instead of water you can add a can of broth for the soup. This way you are not adding too much calories into your system. Recipes are plenty on the internet and experiment with different kinds of recipes, just for fun.

The best practice is to eat in moderation. When you do that, there is no need to watch what you eat. But, if you like to fill-up, then watch out for high calorie, sugary and fried items. It will keep you from being a constant visitor to the Emergency Room in your old age, when you are actually supposed to be enjoying life, with all that money you saved up, after years of hard work!

Look at this scenario for managing your diet. Let’s just say that your daily intake is three-thousand calories a day and it includes just two meals, lunch and dinner. Now try eating the same amount of food in six meals containing five hundred calories each. So six times five hundred would still be three-thousand, but instead of gaining weight, you will actually lose weight by spacing your meals into small sections.

This way, your body is not fooled into storing food for future use, until the next meal comes around. Eating regularly and in small portions is the healthy way to eat. You are eating exactly what you were eating before, only difference is that, instead of two meals, now you are eating six meals. Try different combinations until you are satisfied with your eating habits and portions.

Here is a little incident that will help you go easy on the food. There was an Engineer who used to work with me; he ate his lunch in a restaurant on a daily basis, which was neither good for his blood cholesterol levels or his wallet. He was not happy about it and wanted to pack his lunch and asked me how I do it on a regular basis. He could never find any food at home to pack for lunch. He was in his early twenties and lived with his parents.

Well, I told him that the first thing I did before dinner was to pack my lunch and put it away in the fridge. That way, all I had to do in the morning was to get ready, grab my lunch and leave for work. This worked like a charm and I told him to do the same before supper. But he protested that nothing was left over to pack since his Mom made just the right amount of food for the whole family. So I recommended that he do the packing for lunch before the meal, and let his Mom know ahead of time that he would be doing so. This way she might cook a little more food for supper so as not to disappoint anyone at the dinner table.

You see where I am going with this? If the problem is your refrigerator, get rid of it. Your life is more important than the convenience of saving the leftovers. Life comes first!

I have a simple rule when it comes to food. My adage goes something like this: “Nothing fried and nothing sweet.” If you are overweight or have trouble keeping your weight down, this is a good policy to stick to. An occasional birthday cake is not a problem, but regular portions of desert can quickly add up to your girth!

Now you might think that there is no such thing as a food addict. Think about it, if you can’t stop doing something that you know for sure is bad for you, then you are a classic example of an addict. Keep off that junk food or you won’t live long enough to collect a Social Security Check. You have been paying into the system, whether you liked it or not at the time, ever since you started getting a paycheck.

Control Portions

Controlling what you eat is a no-brainer. You might say that it is ‘easily said than done’. Look at it this way, when you are on medication, you don’t just pop a pill, just because you are bored, do you? You first read the directions on the bottle, follow that to the letter. Now, the question is; why can’t you do the same with food? Good question, you might say! Again, “if there is a will, there is a way,” as always!

All packaged foods come with a warning, explaining how bad it is for human consumption. Well, not really, but it shows the number of calories per serving. So if you add them up for the whole day, you know exactly how many calories you ate that day. Now there is no need for a calculator.

Just stick the numbers in an excel spreadsheet and select the column, click on the sum button, and voila, it will add up all the calories you had for the entire day. If you are not sure how to use a spreadsheet program, ask one of your children or watch a video on YouTube.

Now, if you are a man, then you might need over two-thousand calories per day, depending on what kind of lifestyle you are engaged in. Women typically need less than fifteen-hundred calories a day. New smart phones come with apps that help you add calories. So everything is at your fingertips and if you need to blame someone, you know where to look?

Let’s just say that you are eating a fifteen-hundred per day calorie diet. When you check your weight, if it stays constant with only minor changes, you are okay. This means that your input equals output.

If you put in fifteen-hundred calories a day, and you spend fifteen-hundred calories a day, then your diet is said to be balanced. No need to worry here. But, if you are having an occasional ice-cream or a latte at the local Starbucks, then you will have to cut down on something else for that day or the next day, in order to balance your diet. If not, that latte is going to end up in your tummy or your butt and you may have to liposuck it out. Look what you got yourself into!

Liposuction is a very dangerous business as you might have watched on television or read in the news. The fatality rates are much higher than other kinds of plastic surgery. According to one report, one in five-thousand liposuction patients end up dead.

My suggestion is just don’t do it, but if you do, check the background of the surgeon before committing to one. Choosing a liposuction surgeon based on the lowest price might ultimately be the most expensive choice, if the initial cosmetic results are so bad that another surgeon must be paid to repair the work of the first liposuction surgeon. Among the most common undesirable outcomes of liposuction are include incomplete liposuction with very little evidence that liposuction was actually done, excessive liposuction producing an unnatural or disfigured appearance, irregular and uneven results with unsightly depressions in the skin, and large scars that reveal that the patient has had liposuction.

The overeating scenario described above is similar to a drug-overdose. You don’t follow directions and you would end up in a coma. If you overdose on food, the consequences are gradual but you will end up under a knife, either for liposuction or for a multiple bypass surgery. On the other hand, the money you save by NOT overeating can be set aside for a beautiful vacation somewhere in Europe. So what would you do? Look fat and be miserable and sick, or stay beautiful and take that romantic vacation in Paradise Island? If you are not fond of vacations, feel free to save that money or donate it to your favorite charity. Your name on a new building looks really cool. That’s going to make you feel a whole lot better and you will look hot too. Send me a photo, would you?

How do you know what to eat?

It doesn’t really matter what you eat, as long as the input calories are equal to the output calories. People always say “watch what you eat.” Everyone doesn’t need to watch what they eat. It’s only meant for overweight people or people who tend to put on weight.

People with low thyroxin levels tend to put on weight as their body doesn’t burn as much food as someone with normal levels of this thyroid hormone. Tell your doctor to check your thyroid hormone levels, if you are not sure. The procedure can be done as part of your physical and wouldn’t cost you a penny.

Overweight people need to eat food items that hold fewer calories. The aim here is to cut down on calories and fill your stomach at the same time. If you think about it, you already know what kinds of food items hold fewer calories.

We are bombarded on TV, on a daily basis about good eating habits. It’s ‘fruits and vegetables’, you dummy, one would say. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Fruits are big and they contain a lot of water. The flesh of the fruit is going to fill you up. But, if you are in the habit of eating dried fruits, not that there is anything wrong with it, but it’s just that you need to drink a glass of water before you start filling yourself up with all that dried fruits. Beware of nuts as they contain a lot of fat. Remember, we get oil by squeezing nuts, if you know what I mean!

How about eating a diet rich in fiber? Anything that will increase ‘the bulk’ in your diet will, in effect, lower your calorie intake. Other benefits of eating a diet rich in fiber include lowering the risk of cancer and maintaining a healthy gut, other than lowering your cholesterol by excreting more of your bile salts.

Studies have also shown that including unsaturated fats in your diet can actually lower blood cholesterol5. The major kinds of fats in foods are either saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated or trans-fatty acids. Saturated fats and trans-fats are known to raise blood cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, and also increases the risk of stroke.

A stroke happens when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted because a blood vessel in the brain is blocked due to a clot or bursts open causing bleeding into the brain tissue. A clot is formed when fat, cholesterol, and other substances collect on the wall of the arteries, forming a sticky substance called a plaque. Over time, the plaque builds up making it hard for blood to flow properly, which can cause the blood to clot.

Clots travel though blood vessels and get stuck in the coronary arteries that supply the heart causing a heart attack or getting stuck in the brain causing a stroke. If blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds, the brain cannot get blood and oxygen. Brain cells can die, causing permanent damage.

When it comes to food, if you look for convenience, you may stock up on frozen vegetables from a discount outlet like Sam’s Wholesale. A good rule of thumb is to heat up a bowl of frozen vegetables in a microwave oven (3-5 min), before each meal. Drink a glass of water along with the vegetables before serving the main dish. You will eat a lot less than what you would normally eat.

If you eat slowly, it helps to have company in this case; the amount eaten would be less as compared to gorging your meal. Here the problem is, a disconnect between your brain and your stomach. By the time, the message is delivered, you are like “Oh, man, I am so full.” After a while, you will be wondering, why your butt is so damn big!

So spacing your eating is important. Give your stomach plenty of time to tell you (your brain) that you have had enough. Quit while you are ahead. It will save you a whole lot of money and spare you from a lot of pain. Not to talk about the extra gasoline you will have to burn to drive yourself around in that fatmobile!

*****

-6-

How About Exercise?

It is good to exercise, but how much do you have to exercise? It depends on the number of extra calories that you consume on a daily basis. For instance, if you went for the company picnic, and if the food was delicious, then no one can blame you for gorging yourself until you flopped into an easy chair or the nearest couch you could find.

If you are a habitual overeater, then you need to do a lot of exercise, enough to burn all the extra calories, you so gallantly imbibed. The type of exercise one can do easily is walking. If you weigh 150 lb, and if you were walking 5MPH (12 min/mile) for three miles, then you would have burnt 327 calories3.

A cup of vanilla ice-cream is about 300 calories and if you walked an extra three miles at 5MPH, then you will have no problem with that extra ice-cream you had. But remember, is it worth the pain? I would rather not eat that ice-cream, unless I am about to play tennis or something of that sort.

Eat Less and Live Long

Several studies have shown that animals that were underfed lived longer and healthier than their normally fed counterparts. In a related human study John Apollos lost his weight simply by eating less. As a volunteer in the two-year Comprehensive Assessment of Long-Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE) study at Tufts University in Boston, Apollos has lowered his daily caloric intake 25% over a period of eight months.

The 52-year-old physical trainer has lost more than 25 lbs since the study began and is down to his high school weight4. The researchers running the study are trying to decide if restricting calorie intake can actually slow the aging process and extend human life.

In conclusion, watching what you eat can make you healthy and provide you with a longer life span as compared to your over-weight contemporaries. When you eat, just take it easy, that food is not going anywhere and you are still going to be around. Hey, if you died tonight, then you really don’t care about anything anymore, unless you believe in reincarnation!

Diet For Diabetics

According to the Center for Disease Control, one in three children born in the United States after the year two thousand will develop diabetes6. Problems associated with diabetes include gum inflammation, vision problems, and erectile dysfunction. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to kidney failure and one could end up undergoing dialysis. Controlling your diet can enable you to enjoy life to the fullest and might even help you wean off daily medication to control your condition.

Counting your calories is the key to a healthy diet. If you have a mobile phone, you can download an application that can help you with this chore. For cell phones with the Google android, go to ‘marketplace’ and search for a ‘calorie counter application’. Most applications are free, while some others require you to pay as low as 99 cents to as high as several dollars.

For iPhone users, lose weight with MyFitnessPal. The free application is marketed as the fastest and easiest to use calorie counter for iPhone or iPod Touch. It also claims to have the largest food database of any iPhone calorie counter, and amazingly fast food and exercise entry to count your calories on a daily basis.

Some people continue to crave for food, unless their stomach is full. To fill your stomach without actually eating a lot of calories, add fillers to your diet. One way to do this is to:

First, start with a glass of water or juice. Alcohol contains calories — one jigger of an eighty proof drink contains about 97 Calories, so if you want to start with an alcoholic beverage, then make sure that the number of calories consumed in the drink is subtracted from the food you are about to consume, unless you plan on burning off that drink with extra exercise that day or the next. As you can see here, enjoying a drink or desert actually costs you; either in terms of reduced food intake or extra exercise.

Second, add a salad with minimal dressing and few nuts. The dressing is rich in calories — about 150 Calories per serving — and the nuts are rich in oil. You can check this data on the bottle of dressing that you are using. Each gram of oil contains nine grams of fat. Try adding dried fruits instead of nuts. Pile on as much greens as you can.

Third, make sure that the dish you are having has a lot of fibers. This has dual benefits; (1) it’s filler with no added calories, and (2) fiber increases the bulk in your feces and cleans up your intestines. Bile salts secreted by the liver is rich in cholesterol and a diet rich in fiber, reduces the reabsorption of bile salts from the intestines and reduces your blood cholesterol levels. Eating a lot of fiber containing food items such as oats or yucca is the best way to avoid constipation.

Fourth, leave room for fruits. Most fruits are low calorie and they contain a lot of water that increases the bulk. By the time you are done with your meal, you will not only be full, but would have eaten less number of calories as compared to a diet where you didn’t follow the four steps outlined above.

Diets with high fiber include beans, oatmeal, broccoli, yam, and yucca.

The ideal amount of fiber in the diet is about forty grams per day. Instead of white bread, use rye bread. Yam and sweet potatoes are preferable to regular potatoes. Bran cereals are better than regular cereals. Avoid foods with high glycemic index; these are foods that increase your blood sugar rapidly.

Avoid sugar, white bread, white potatoes, sugary cereals, and fruits that are over-ripe. Cheese is believed to be addictive due to the presence of casomorphins that stimulate the brain opioid receptors. Find healthy foods that you like and try to flavor them up to suit your taste.

Excessive consumption of any foods including healthy foods is detrimental to your health. So the best modus operandi is to eat less and more often. If you tend to eat more, stick to healthy foods!

Diet To Ward Off Cancer

Consumption of colored, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant vegetables have been shown to elicit protection against many types of cancer mainly because of the antioxidant properties inherent in these pigments that give a certain color to many vegetables. The benefits of drinking red wine in moderation is also attributable to theses colored pigments found in red wine.

  • Carrots, yams and spinach.

  • Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, and cauliflower.

  • Tomatoes contain lycopene which has been shown to lower prostate cancer.

  • Shellfish is a rich source of zinc.

  • Spices and herbs that contain antioxidants — Cinnamon, clove, oregano, turmeric, and parsley.

  • Red wine, green tea, strawberries, red grapes, asparagus, and blueberries.

For someone genetically predisposed to cancer, no amount of healthy eating is going to help and early proactive measures are required, such as regular screening, and mastectomy for patients with breast cancer in the family. Yearly physicals and sticking to your family doctors advice are necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Always get a second opinion, even if you trust your doctor one hundred percent; it can never hurt!

Diet For A Healthy Heart

The heart is the pumping station for the whole body, and therefore a healthy heart is vital for good health and longevity. If climbing stairs tires you out, it simply means that your heart is not doing its job, and it is necessary to get a physical examination and maybe a consult with a cardiologist. It’s often essential to tell your family doctor about the condition of your heart and even suggest that you see a cardiologist to rule out impending danger.

Why is it important, one might ask, but your health is in your hands and it is vital to be proactive before it is too late? A physical checkup will only diagnose conditions like high blood pressure and alterations in heart sounds. Atherosclerosis is a condition that develops when plaques build up in the arteries restricting blood flow, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke, if the plaque gets loose and blocks blood flow in the brain. Major risk factors for this condition include diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heredity — bad genes in the family.

A heart healthy diet is technically a diet that is most likely to reduce the total cholesterol in the body. Now a days, doctors recommend statins for patients with high cholesterol. According to the latest report, the number of Americans on statins has dramatically increased to a whopping twenty-five million. These drugs reduce cholesterol in the body by reducing the activity of an enzyme known as HMG CoA reductase, which is involved in cholesterol synthesis.

The two main ingredients in the diet to avoid are saturated fat and salt in your diet. Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol; where as the sodium in the salt directly contributes to high blood pressure. The recommended daily dose of salt for an adult is 2,300 milligrams. People older than fifty should limit their salt intake to less than 1,500 milligrams per day.

Fats to avoid includes: Butter, Lard, Bacon fat, Cream sauce, Non-dairy creamers, Hydrogenated margarine and shortening, and Cocoa butter found in chocolate. Others include coconut, palm, cottonseed, and palm-kernel oils. Unsaturated oils like olive and canola oil are recommended for lowering blood cholesterol.

The recommended protein sources include: Lean meat, poultry and fish, low-fat dairy products such as skim milk, and egg whites. Skinless poultry, Legumes, Soybeans and soy products, such as soy burgers and tofu are recommended by the experts.

Fruits and vegetables to avoid include: Coconuts, Vegetables with creamy sauces, Fried or breaded vegetables, canned fruit packed in heavy syrup, and frozen fruit with sugar added.

Whole-grain products are recommended over products made with refined flour, owing to the fact that whole grains contain fibers that help lower blood cholesterol. Any food item that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids is an ideal part of any healthy diet. Soy products along with fruits and vegetables are universally recommended for a healthy heart.

The first step to take towards creating a healthy eating habit is to make a list of the quantity and type of food you eat, and compare that list with the items and quantities that are recommended for someone in your age group. This will put you in the right direction, and help you plan your diet eliminating the dangerous items until your diet contains only the healthy ingredients recommended by the experts.
